The Consortium of the District of Genoa and the University of Genoa, together with the districts of Camogli, Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure manage the protected marine area. The area was instituted in 1999 by an administrative order from the Ministry of the Environment to safeguard the seabed and coastal area opposite the Portofino Promontory.
The protected shores of Portofino are divided into three zones comprising a total of 13 kilometres of coastline. The seabed structure is extremely interesting and a great attraction for scuba divers. It is characterized by steep walls and hosts an amazing variety of marine life.
The Hotels of the Hoteliers Association of Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino are situated along the coast opposite the protected marine areas.
